Today is my five year blogiversary! Can you believe it? Five years ago I didn't even know what the heck a blog even was and I started this one because my brother told me it would be a good place to blog the things I found interesting across the internet. So here is what it became.
Anyway, it also seems like a good time to lay out what my goals for this coming year are.
Goals for 2010Most of my goals this year revolve around food and it has been all consuming for me lately. No, not in an emotional I'm going to go binge on something bad for me kind of way, but well, let me just lay out the goals and you will see.
Eating More VegetablesI started drinking green smoothies about midway through December and I'm loving it. It is such an easy way to get your vegetables in! And I already feel more energetic. I plan on continuing for life. Plus there are a few more ideas listed below on how I plan to integrate more vegetables into our lives.
Getting My Toddler To Gain WeightMy toddler isn't gaining weight like his doctor would like him to. We've been seeing a nutritionist. It doesn't help that he is super picky. I want him to eat healthy food though, so I've started a new blog devoted to this. It's called
The Picky Eater and its our own little testing laboratory where I blog what I'm trying and if its working or not. Check it out.
Healthier SnacksMy toddler would eat snacks all day long if I would let him so this is one area I want to improve on for him {as well as others in the family}. It's also something I'm blogging about a lot more on my
Picky Eater blog.
As for me, I plan on snacking on freeze dried vegetables. They contain all their healthy nutrients still and provide the nice "crunch" you sometimes need when you're feeling snacky. And hey, it's another easy way to get your veggies in. Just be sure to drink lots of water if you decide to do this one too!
My daughter and I are also planning on learning how to make raw chocolates and other delicious treats from raw healthy ingredients. I'm getting ready to place my order for our first cacao beans soon. This is something I will be blogging about on
my Picky Eater blog too as we get going on it.
Eat More LocalThis year I will do better on my own garden. I will fix my planter boxes. I want to plant a garden that will feed my green smoothie habit. I also want to get some Goji berries planted as well as figure out where to plant a few fruit trees and things. But this will fall under my garden blog,
The Potager Garden.
I also plan on signing up again for my local CSA--
Borski Farms. If you live near me, I highly recommend them. We got a lot of really good produce each week the last time we did it and I love that they are local. In fact, last year when I was shopping at their Farmers Market one of the farmers told me how they don't make tons of money doing it, but how much they just love doing what they do, and growing what they grow! And he just totally won me over. You bet I'm going to support that! And if you live near me, I hope you will too. They have a super convenient pickup location over in Kaysville {as well as other places like Ogden and Salt Lake}.
Transition to a Whole Foods DietI've always been more of a whole foods person anyway, but ever since the toddler was born I fell back into the typical American sort of diet because it was super easy and I was super busy and stressed out and subsequently packed on the pounds. Serious pounds. And its not pretty and I'm sick of it.
Now just to reassure my husband on this point, I am not going to become vegetarian again. Though I love eating that way, I know he doesn't enjoy it quite like I do. So yes, we will still eat some meat. But we will not be eating processed, packaged junk anymore. Sorry, honey that means even the Cream of Mushroom soup needs to go. In fact, I even plan on taking it a few steps further than before when we used to eat this way. {This is what I think worries him}. We weren't completely "whole foods" last time. We were "mostly" whole foods. We still ate store bought salad dressings, and ketchup and other small things like that.
So even though the Cream of Mushroom soup will be out, which my husband loves in a good casserole, I am going to have to learn some new alternatives to his favorite comfort type food meals so that he can still be happy and we can still be healthy.
We will also be cooking with more beans and whole grains. My food storage will love me for not ignoring them like I used to.
I plan on making this transition over the next 12 months and I am following
Green Smoothie Girls 12 step plan to do this. Plus she is a Utah gal too which I love. Check her out.
Education CampaignThis one is mostly for my kids. I want them to realize that food is important and that it gives our bodies the things they need to function, and grow. I want them to know that raspberries not only taste good, but that they also help enhance the health of your kidneys and cardiovascular system. Or that mangoes are delicious and among other benefits, they also have properties that help relieve clogged pores {the tween should like that one!}.
Get More OrganizedI don't want food to get lost in the freezer. I also need to make a better menu and meal plan. Lately I haven't been doing that and then dinner time rolls around and I don't have any idea what I'm making yet, or I haven't given myself enough time to start some of the things I needed to do, like soak some beans or whatever and so then we end up having a yo-yo {you're on your own} night or something easy like grabbing takeout. This whole problem could be solved if I just got myself a little more organized.
So there you go. In a nutshell, those are my goals for 2010. And as you can see, I plan on blogging about most of these things on blogs of their own. So I hope you will join me over there if any of these topics interest you. I will occasionally still be blogging random things over here like I always have.
So here's to health and happiness for you and yours this year!
